Scampi runs second in the £150k Old Newton Cup!

Scampi has epitomised the beauty of racehorse ownership and the quality of races he has run in so far this season is incredible. Not only that, his targets are getting better and better as the season progresses.

In the space of a week, Scampi has run two blinders in races worth a combined £350k in prize money. The first came at Haydock in the Old Newton Cup on Saturday, July 8 worth £150k, where Scampi was sent off at 12/1 in a field of 13 runners. He was beaten only half a length and his owners were left with slightly dry throats, having screamed him home all the way down the long straight!

Scampi came out of the race in great form and the £200k John Smith’s Cup the following Saturday was a race that we’d had one eye on since his win at the Dante Festival at York in May. This equally historic race, first run in 1960, is one of the richest handicaps over the trip in the British racing calendar.

The decision to run him again so quickly was rewarded as Scampi produced another classy performance to finish sixth of the 18 runners, beaten only five lengths. The excitement is building with every race Scampi runs in this season and he is now being aimed at the Shergar Cup Challenge at Ascot on August 12, followed by a run in the £500,000 Ebor handicap at York two weeks later. His win at York in May was a ‘win and you’re in’ race for the Ebor, so we go there with a horse proven over course and distance and hopefully a big chance.
