Gibbs Island triumphs on debut!
Our latest RaceShare hurdling recruit, Gibbs Island made the perfect start for his owners when winning at Sedgefield on Sunday in the Vickers.Bet Maiden Hurdle (2m1f). Sent off the 10-3 second favourite, he dominated the race with his market rivals from the start, jumping fluently under jockey Stan Sheppard. Turning for home, he and the odds-on favourite, Surrey Belle, started to draw clear and fought a titanic battle over the last two hurdles before Gibbs Island asserted near the line to win by half-a-length.
The Sedgefield management laid on a private box and lunch for 70 of his owners, so Gibbs was not lacking in support- and the celebrations continued for the rest of the afternoon!
It's fantastic to have a winner with Tom Lacey following Marlacoo's superb 2nd at Sandown on Friday, but it's particularly pleasing to have a hurdler who is one-from-one and we couldn't be more excited about his future. He has an entry in the Triumph Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival and, whilst that must be seen as a speculative entry at this stage, it will be fascinating to see how he gets on his next start in the next few weeks.
