Gibbs Island on course for the Cheltenham Festival!
It's not every Saturday you get to cheer home a winner on an ITV racecard, but Gibbs Island's owners experienced just that at the weekend!
Having won on his hurdles debut at Sedgefield last month, Haydock was a fairly quick reappearance but, more importantly, a big step up in grade for the Class 2 Victor Ludorum. Four rivals stood in the way, including one who made an eye-catching hurdle debut himself when third behind a horse among the favourites for the Grade 1 Triumph Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival.
However, Gibbs Island was more than a match for the field - beating that horse into second - and despite racing keenly, sauntering clear for a six-length victory under Stan Sheppard to keep our hopes and dreams alive.
In winning, he confirmed himself as a serious prospect in this sphere and the sky's the limit now. The Triumph Hurdle is in his sights - which had previously been an entry made by his trainer Tom Lacey prior to his debut 'just in case', but that goes to show why you enter in the first place, because that has now become a real possibility.
With most of his owners buying a share after we bought him at the horses-in-training sale in the autumn for just £49, they have already had two memorable days out for the money and hopefully many more to come!
