The Derby has historically been the most prestigious Flat race in Britain. Run at Epsom Downs over 1 1/2 miles (2,400 metres), it has been a key part of the British racing calendar since 1780. The race has produced legendary winners like Ribot, Sea Bird, Shergar and Galileo and is considered the ultimate test for three-year-old thoroughbreds.

2. The Grand National (UK)
Steeplechasing’s greatest thrill, the Grand National has historically been one of the most unpredictable races in the world. Held at Aintree Racecourse near Liverpool, this four-mile contest features iconic fences like Becher’s Brook and The Chair. Known for producing shock winners and spectacular finishes, the Grand National captivates millions of viewers, many of whom place a bet, even if they aren’t regular racing fans.

3. The Kentucky Derby (USA)

6. The Dubai World Cup (UAE)
The Dubai World Cup is one of the world’s richest horse races, with a staggering multi-million-dollar purse. Run over 2,000 metres (1 1/4 miles) on dirt at Meydan Racecourse, it attracts top-class competitors from around the globe. The race is part of the Dubai World Cup Night, an extravagant event that showcases the glitz and glamour of horseracing.

7. The Belmont Stakes (USA)
The third and final leg of the American Triple Crown, the Belmont Stakes is known as the “Test of the Champion.” Held at Belmont Park in New York, this 1 1/2 mile (2,400 meters) race is the longest of the three Triple Crown races. The event has been the stage for some of the most dramatic moments in racing history, including Secretariat’s 31-length victory in 1973.

8. The Breeders’ Cup Classic (USA)
