The Greatest Racehorses of All Time: Legends of the Turf

Horse racing has a long history, filled with extraordinary athletes that have captivated audiences worldwide. While many legendary racehorses have left their mark, some stand out as the greatest of all time. This article focuses on the most remarkable racehorses in the sport’s folklore. The article is viewed mainly from a UK and Ireland perspective and by greatest we don’t necessarily mean highest rating, we are also focusing heavily on the extent to which they were celebrated by the racing public.

1. Frankel (UK)
Often regarded as the greatest racehorse of all time, Frankel was undefeated in his 14-race career. Trained by Sir Henry Cecil and owned by Prince Khalid Abdullah, Frankel dazzled with his raw speed and dominance. His most famous victory came in the 2012 Queen Anne Stakes at Royal Ascot, where he won by an astonishing 11 lengths. His Timeform rating of 147 remains the highest ever recorded, cementing his legacy as a true icon of the sport.

2. Arkle (IRE)
Considered the greatest steeplechaser of all time, Arkle dominated the National Hunt scene in the 1960s. His rating of 212 remains the highest ever recorded for a chaser. Trained in Ireland by Tom Dreaper, he won three Cheltenham Gold Cups (1964, 1965, 1966) and carried immense weights in handicaps, still managing to outclass his rivals. His legend remains unmatched in jump racing.

3. Red Rum (UK)
A name synonymous with the Grand National, Red Rum is the only horse to win the race three times (1973, 1974, and 1977). His incredible stamina and jumping ability made him a household name, and his 1973 victory—coming from 30 lengths behind—is still considered one of the greatest comebacks in racing history. Trained by Ginger McCain, Red Rum’s influence on National Hunt racing remains unparalleled.

4. Desert Orchid (UK)
A fan-favorite and one of the most charismatic steeplechasers of all time, Desert Orchid was renowned for his front-running style and versatility. The grey gelding won an impressive 34 of his 71 starts, with his most famous victory coming in the 1989 Cheltenham Gold Cup. He overcame heavy ground and fierce competition to claim a legendary win, solidifying his status as a national treasure.

5. Nijinsky (IRE)
Trained by the legendary Vincent O’Brien and ridden by Lester Piggott, Nijinsky became the last horse to win the UK Triple Crown (2000 Guineas, Epsom Derby, and St. Leger) in 1970. His unparalleled combination of speed and stamina made him a dominant force in racing. He was later retired to stud, where he sired many champions, further influencing the breed.

6. Brigadier Gerard (UK)
With 17 wins from 18 starts, Brigadier Gerard is one of the greatest milers in racing history. Trained by Dick Hern, he won races across various distances, showcasing incredible versatility. His most memorable victory came in the 1971 2000 Guineas, where he defeated the highly-rated Mill Reef. His career earnings and unbeaten record in major mile races solidified his place in history.

7. Sea The Stars (IRE)
A modern racing superstar, Sea The Stars achieved an incredible feat in 2009 by winning six consecutive Group 1 races, including the 2000 Guineas, Epsom Derby, and Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe. Trained by John Oxx, he possessed a rare blend of speed, stamina, and tactical brilliance. He retired unbeaten in his three-year-old season and became a leading sire, producing champions in his image.

8. Mill Reef (UK)
A champion of the early 1970s, Mill Reef won the 1971 Epsom Derby, King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes, and the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe. His elegant running style and extraordinary acceleration made him a formidable competitor. Trained by Ian Balding, he recovered from a career-ending injury to become a highly successful sire.

9. Dancing Brave (UK)
One of the most talented racehorses of the 1980s, Dancing Brave is best known for his incredible turn of foot. Trained by Guy Harwood, he won the 2000 Guineas, King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes, and the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe in 1986. His Arc win is still regarded as one of the most stunning performances in the race’s history.

10. Secretariat (USA)
Although not from the UK, Secretariat deserves an honorable mention as one of the greatest racehorses of all time. His 1973 Triple Crown victories, including a 31-length demolition in the Belmont Stakes, remain legendary. His time of 2:24 for the Belmont still stands as a record today. Nicknamed "Big Red," Secretariat’s influence on thoroughbred racing extended beyond North America, inspiring generations of racing fans worldwide.

From the legendary speed of Frankel to the incredible endurance of Red Rum, the UK has produced some of the greatest racehorses in history.
