Breathe Easy

RaceShare owners were rejoicing at Southwell on Saturday evening, when Breathe Easy claimed his second win, this time on his handicap debut in the 6.30pm handicap.

Trained by Andrew Balding, and ridden by Callum Hutchinson, he jumped well but with only four runners in the race, the pace was slower than ideal and the early part of the straight then turned into a sprint. However, despite this - which wouldn’t have suited his big, galloping stride which takes a while to get into gear - he saw off all competitors and we expect more progress to come from him.

This race was a step up in trip to 1 mile, and Callum reported after the race that he feels the horse would have no problem up in distance to 1m2f, which gives his owners plenty of big-race handicaps to explore this summer.

Initial race plans include aiming for Sandown’s Esher Cup on Friday, April 24, and then after that possibly the prestigious Haydock Silver Bowl or Newbury’s London Gold Cup, both in May.

It’s a busy week for RaceShare owners, with Criminal Shore in action this evening at Wolverhampton at 6pm; then Robusto at the same course tomorrow evening at 5.25pm. Stablemate Buccabay then heads to Kempton on Wednesday for the handicap at 7pm, where he will be joined by RaceShare and Racing TV’s syndicate horse, The Lost Sock, who runs in the 7.30pm over 6f.

Marlacoo, for trainer Tom Lacey, then has three possible entries - the first at Haydock on Thursday, Ayr on Friday, or Warwick on Sunday and we close the week Gibbs Island potentially running in Saturday’s Imperial Cup at Sandown.

Breathe Easy hit the headlines last night at Kempton, as he was the comfortable winning favourite of the maiden race on the card at 5pm!

Watching on were around 28 owners and their guests - a great turnout for the 100 share syndicate - and each of them enjoyed a private box in the Lanzarote Suite for the evening.

Sent off the 2/1 favourite, Oisin Murphy adapted to the slow early pace by letting Breathe Easy roll on in front and set the fractions. As they entered the home straight, he began to turn the pace up a notch and, ultimately, rode the perfect race with none of the horses behind able to quicken up past him.

His sole challenge came from the Juddmonte-owned Leonetto, who had run very well at Southwell last time out. He made a strong challenge on the inside at the cutaway and briefly looked set to make a bold bid, but Breathe Easy was equal to the move and was well on top at the finish.

This marked the start of a really exciting season for him and the long term target in Andrew Balding’s mind is the Britannia Handicap at Royal Ascot!

Wednesday sees Breathe Easy return to the scene of his debut at Kempton Park. He has made huge strides since that first run and comes into the race with a lively chance against some useful rivals.

Owners won’t have to wait long to see him in action, as he takes his chance in the second race on the card at 5:00 pm - a seven-furlong maiden.
